President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigeria’s Flamingos to remain focused and determined as they prepare to face Japan in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Tinubu congratulated the national U-17 women’s team on Thursday following their historic 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president described the team’s qualification as a remarkable achievement.
He said the victory had brought “immense pride and joy to millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.”
Tinubu also applauded the coaching crew and everyone whose hard work and support contributed to the team’s successful campaign.
As the Flamingos prepare for Saturday’s final, the president urged the players to maintain the determination that has taken them this far.
“I encourage you to approach the final with the same fighting spirit and belief that have brought you this far.
"I have confidence in your ability to make history by winning the coveted world title,” he said.
The president also called on Nigerians to support the young players, describing them as worthy ambassadors of the country.
“I call on all Nigerians to rally behind the young ambassadors of the nation, whose achievements continue to showcase Nigeria’s sporting excellence and inspire a new generation of girls to pursue their dreams uninhibited,” Tinubu stated.
He added, “Once again, Nigeria is proud of you.
"Go for the trophy, Flamingos!”
The victory secured Nigeria’s first-ever appearance in the competition’s final, making the Flamingos the first African team to reach that stage.
Japan secured the other final spot after defeating defending champions North Korea in a penalty shootout.
The final will take place on Saturday, November 7, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco.
