Two firefighters were taken to hospital on Sunday after collapsing while battling a fire that destroyed the top floor of a three-storey residential building in the Ketu-Ikosi area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the fire started at about 6:31 a.m. at one of a pair of twin residential buildings on Ademola Taiwo Street.
Emergency responders, working with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, quickly brought the blaze under control and stopped it from spreading to nearby buildings.
LASEMA spokesperson Olawale Afolabi said the fire was traced to an electrical surge from a prepaid meter.
"The incident involved one of a pair of twin three-storey residential buildings.
"Upon the arrival of the Tiger Squad, it was observed that the fire had engulfed the topmost floor of the affected building," Afolabi said.
He said the firefighters collapsed during efforts to put out the flames and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Afolabi praised the emergency teams for preventing a more serious disaster.
"The collaborative efforts of LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service ensured the fire was swiftly contained, preventing it from spreading to the adjoining building and nearby properties," he said.
No deaths were reported, and all residents of the affected building were safely evacuated before the fire spread further, according to the agency.
Officials said the top floor of the building suffered extensive damage, while the remaining sections were saved.
The incident is the latest in a series of fire outbreaks recorded in Lagos in recent months.
Emergency officials have repeatedly urged residents to ensure that electrical installations are properly maintained and to report fires immediately so that responders can arrive quickly and reduce the risk of injuries and property damage.
