US Congressman Says America Will Closely Watch Nigeria's 2027 Elections

U.S. Congressman Riley Moore says the United States will closely monitor Nigeria's 2027 general elections, stressing that Washington is interested in how the polls are conducted and their outcome.

Moore made the remarks during an interview with Noire TV, where he was asked about Nigeria's next general election and possible U.S. support for the country's democratic process.

"We will be paying close attention to Nigeria's 2027 election," Moore said.

He added, "We are certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections will unfold and how they are executed, and that is something that myself and my administration will pay very close attention to."

Although the congressman did not announce any specific U.S. action, his comments come as political activities are gradually increasing ahead of Nigeria's 2027 elections, when voters are expected to elect a president, governors, members of the National Assembly and state lawmakers.

Moore's remarks also reflect continued international interest in Nigeria's electoral process following the disputed 2023 general elections, which led to several court challenges and renewed calls for greater transparency and credibility in future polls.

The United States has repeatedly expressed support for free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. Election observers from several international organisations have also monitored previous Nigerian elections.

Moore's latest comments are expected to add to discussions about electoral reforms and preparations as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 contest.
