Track and field analyst Adebayo Abimbola says Nigeria has a strong chance of winning medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with several home-based athletes expected to impress in Glasgow.
Speaking with our correspondent ahead of the Games, Abimbola said this year's team stands out because it includes many athletes who developed in Nigeria.
She identified sprinter Chidera Ezeakor, 200-meter national trials winner Miracle Ezechukwu, long jumpers Prestina Ochonogor and Ruth Usoro, and teenage shot put star Jessica Oji as athletes to watch.
She said Nigeria should also compete strongly in the men's 100, 200 and 400 meters, the relay events and the 400-meter hurdles.
On the women's side, Abimbola believes Rosemary Chigozie could challenge for a medal in the 100 meters, while Ella Onojuvwevwo and hurdler Tobi Amusan are also strong medal hopes.
Abimbola expressed confidence in Team Nigeria's preparations, saying many athletes have competed regularly this season and attended training camps before arriving in Scotland.
She said the relay team could face some challenges, but expects Nigeria to do much more than simply take part in the Games.
"I think the camping has been pretty solid," she said, adding that she expects a successful outing for Team Nigeria.
