Aston Villa have announced plans to take legal action against former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher following what the Premier League club described as unacceptable insults directed at the club and its supporters.
The controversy began after Carragher suggested that Villa manager Unai Emery should consider replacing under-pressure Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, arguing that the Old Trafford job would represent a step up for the Spanish coach.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher defended his position after facing criticism from Villa supporters, insisting that Manchester United remain a bigger club despite Villa's recent success.
"Aston Villa will never be Manchester United," Carragher declared, before telling Villa supporters to "shut the f*** up."
The 48-year-old argued that football operates within a hierarchy, comparing the situation to Real Madrid signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009.
His comments sparked outrage among Villa supporters, prompting club chairman Nassef Sawiris to issue a strongly worded statement on Friday night.
"Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans," the statement read.
"Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football."
The dispute comes amid Villa's impressive transformation under Emery, who took charge in 2022 and guided the club back into the Champions League before winning the Europa League last season.
Villa also reached the Champions League quarter-finals during the 2024-25 campaign, losing to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
Carragher has praised Emery's managerial achievements but maintains that the opportunity to manage a club of Manchester United's stature would be difficult to reject.
The club's announcement signals a significant escalation in the disagreement, although details of the proposed legal action have not yet been disclosed.
