Commonwealth Games 2026: Selection Concerns Persist as Nigeria Begins Charge for Historic Medal Haul in Glasgow

Nigeria's preparations for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, which kicked off on Thursday 23rd July 2026 have not been without controversy.

In the days leading up to the Games, concerns emerged from within Team Nigeria after some athletes complained that they were omitted from events they had qualified for, while others were entered into disciplines they had not prepared to compete in.

The complaints prompted calls for the National Sports Commission (NSC) to review registration procedures with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and ensure affected athletes receive fair treatment before their competitions begin.

Despite those concerns, Nigerian officials remain optimistic that the country's blend of world champions, Paralympic champions and emerging talents can deliver another memorable Commonwealth Games campaign.

Team Nigeria presented a contingent of 74 athletes at the Opening Ceremony, marking a historic number of participants since we first debuted at the games 76 years in Auckland, New Zealand.

The NSC had facilitated a high-performance training camp in Aberdeen before the trip to Glasgow to aid with preparations.

The team will compete in athletics, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and para sports, among others, with hopes of surpassing previous medal performances.

Away from competition, Nigeria recorded a diplomatic success at the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers' Meeting.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko urged member nations to reserve the 2034 Commonwealth Games for an African host.

"After a 100 years of the Commonwealth Games the cycle cannot be complete without Africa.

"We need to adopt a very proactive, intentional and deliberate decision here today to clearly indicate that the 2034 Commonwealth Games should be reserved for Africa to bid for," Dikko said.

According to the NSC, delegates unanimously backed the proposal, leading to an amendment of the meeting's official communiqué to state that Africa should be considered to host the 2034 Games.

Dikko also called for reforms, including adding football to the programme and allowing multi-city hosting to improve the event's financial sustainability.
