Nigeria’s Federal Government has fulfilled the $100,000 reward pledged to members of the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumph at the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
The announcement was first made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he praised the team’s achievement, describing them as a source of national pride.
He said: “You have made Nigeria proud once again.
"Your discipline, resilience, and unity are an inspiration to the nation.”
The President also reaffirmed government commitment to rewarding sporting excellence, adding: “We remain committed to ensuring that our athletes are properly rewarded and supported for their sacrifices and achievements.”
In the same post, he referenced earlier commitments that include housing support for outstanding athletes as part of a broader welfare package for national teams.
The players have now received the naira equivalent of the $100,000 promised reward, alongside coaching staff and team officials who were also included in the incentive package.
President Tinubu also extended similar assurances to the Super Falcons, commending their performances on the international stage and noting that: “Our Super Falcons continue to make us proud.
"Their dedication will not go unrewarded, and the government will continue to support them both financially and through welfare initiatives.”
The development highlights the administration’s continued push to improve motivation and welfare for Nigerian athletes representing the country globally.
The announcement has expected to further spark reactions across the sporting community, especially around government commitment to athlete welfare and long-term support structures.
