Federal Government to Immortalise Stephen Keshi Ten Years After Death

The federal government will immortalise former Super Eagles captain and coach Stephen Keshi by inscribing his name on the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame in Lagos, 10 years after his death.

Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami announced the honour during a memorial lecture held in Lagos to commemorate the football legend.

According to him, Keshi’s contributions to Nigerian football and sports diplomacy earned him a place among the nation’s most celebrated sporting icons.

“The existing list will now be extended to include the name of former Nigerian Green Eagles captain and national team coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, CON,” Odegbami said.

“He has been considered worthy, and his contributions identified, justified and approved by the NIIA.”

The ceremony is scheduled for July 28, one day before the 10th anniversary of Keshi’s burial.

The Wall of Fame, a national monument established by the NIIA, recognises Nigerians who have advanced the country’s international image and diplomatic objectives through sports.

Keshi remains one of only a few individuals to have won the Africa Cup of Nations both as a player and as a coach.

He captained Nigeria to the 1994 AFCON title and guided the Super Eagles to continental glory again in 2013.
