Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi has admitted he is not proud of the controversial “towel incident” involving Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The incident occurred during Nigeria’s semi-final clash with Morocco, where Nwabali’s towel was repeatedly taken away by pitch-side staff, drawing criticism from fans and observers.
Speaking after the tournament, Hakimi described the situation as unfortunate and emotionally charged.
“They were difficult moments, charged with tension inside the stadium.
"I do not feel proud of the image we showed because of the towel incident,” Hakimi said.
Despite the controversy, the Moroccan defender insisted that his team remained respectful throughout the competition.
“The team presented a good competitive showing.
"We respected the opponent and the tournament,” he added.
Nigeria eventually lost the semi-final to Morocco on penalties after a goalless match, despite Nwabali saving one of the spot-kicks.
The incident also resurfaced during the tournament’s final, raising further concerns about sportsmanship and conduct at major competitions.
Hakimi also addressed the wider controversy surrounding the tournament’s outcome, saying authorities are still reviewing the situation.
“What should happen is currently being assessed, and we hope a decision is taken that serves the interests of African football,” he said.
The episode has continued to spark debate about fair play, even as the tournament concluded with lingering disputes over its final result.
