Nigeria's Best Athletes Battle for Commonwealth Games Places at Lagos Trials

Nigeria's top athletes will compete in Lagos this weekend as the country begins its selection process for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The three-day Commonwealth Games Trials will take place from 20th to 22nd June 2026 at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, with athletes battling for places on Team Nigeria.

A total of 32 events will be contested across track and field disciplines.

Leading the star-studded lineup is world champion and African record holder Tobi Amusan, who enters the women's 100-meter hurdles in strong form after recent victories in Rabat and Taiwan. She will be joined by several of the country's biggest athletics stars, including sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, quarter-miler Samuel Ogazi, shot put record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, high jumper Temitope Adeshina and long jump star Ese Brume.

Ajayi is expected to be one of the main attractions after recently running 9.84 seconds to break the long-standing Nigerian men's 100-meter record.

Ogazi has also impressed this season, posting a personal best that moved him to the top of the world rankings in the men's 400 meters.

Organisers described the trials as one of Nigeria's most competitive national championships in recent years because of the growing rivalry between home-based athletes and Nigerians competing in the United States collegiate system.

Adding extra motivation, more than ₦3 million has been set aside for the Excellence in Athletics Prize to reward outstanding home-based athletes and coaches.

Organizers also said "plans are already at an advanced stage to increase the prize pool for future national championships."

The trials will determine the athletes who will represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for 23rd July 23 to 2nd August 2026 in Glasgow.
