Paralympic Champion Oluwafemiayo Named Team Nigeria Captain for Commonwealth Games

Two-time Paralympic champion and world para-powerlifting giant Folashade Oluwafemiayo has been named captain of Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the appointment on Sunday, saying the decision recognises Oluwafemiayo's achievements, leadership and commitment to Nigerian sports.

NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade said the selection was based on merit and the athlete's outstanding record.

“We are intentional about the selection of our team captain,” Olopade said.

“Folashade Oluwafemiayo is the ideal choice, having consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience, and excellence throughout her distinguished career.”

He described her as “a multiple gold medalist, a former world champion, and one of Nigeria's most decorated para athletes,” adding that “her leadership qualities and winning mentality make her an inspiration to every member of Team Nigeria.”

Oluwafemiayo is one of the world's most successful para powerlifters.

She has won Paralympic, world and Commonwealth titles and has broken world records during her career.

Her appointment also highlights the major role Nigeria's para athletes have played in winning medals at international competitions.

The NSC said Team Nigeria will travel to Glasgow with a mix of experienced champions and young athletes determined to make the country proud.

The commission has already set an ambitious target of a top-five finish at the Games after improving athlete welfare, training camps and preparations.

Olopade recently said Nigeria should aim for at least 20 gold medals, expressing confidence that the country's athletes can surpass previous performances.

Oluwafemiayo's appointment continues a tradition of honouring accomplished athletes with leadership roles, as Team Nigeria looks to build on its strong record at the Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games will be held from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026.
