Pressure Mounts on Carrick as United Suffer Another Defeat

Manchester United's struggles continued on Sunday as they suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, piling further pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

Goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson secured a comfortable victory for the visitors, extending United's winless run to eight matches across all competitions.

The defeat came just four days after United's embarrassing 4-1 loss to Italian side Como in the UEFA Champions League, further raising questions about Carrick's future at the club.

Before kick-off, Carrick made the controversial decision to drop captain Bruno Fernandes from his starting lineup following the midfielder's public criticism of the team's tactics after the defeat to Como.

Fernandes had questioned United's approach to pressing their opponents, suggesting that the tactical decisions made by the coaching staff contributed to their poor performance.

The Portuguese international was named among the substitutes, with Harry Maguire taking over the captain's armband and Mason Mount starting in an attacking midfield role.

Bournemouth took the lead in the 38th minute when Rayan converted from Justin Kluivert's free-kick, before Tavernier doubled the advantage five minutes later after a defensive mistake by Leny Yoro.

United went into the break trailing 2-0, prompting Carrick to introduce Matheus Cunha for Youri Tielemans at the start of the second half.

However, the substitution failed to inspire a comeback as Bournemouth continued to threaten the United defence.

Evanilson completed the scoring in the 71st minute, capitalising on goalkeeper Senne Lammens' decision to rush off his line before finishing from distance.

Despite United's attacking struggles, Fernandes remained on the bench throughout the encounter as the home side failed to find a response.

The result was greeted with boos from sections of the Old Trafford crowd, reflecting growing frustration among supporters over the team's performances.

United have now dropped to 16th place in the Premier League standings, just one point above the relegation zone, having recorded only one league victory this season.

The defeat also marked Bournemouth's third 3-0 Premier League victory at Old Trafford, following similar wins in December 2023 and December 2024.

For Carrick, the result adds to mounting scrutiny over his management of the team, particularly his decision to leave Fernandes out following their disagreement over tactics.

Manchester United will now turn their attention to next Saturday's Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as they attempt to end their prolonged winless run.
