Super Falcons Return to Abuja Following Cameroon Friendlies as Uncertainty Clouds 2026 WAFCON

Nigeria’s women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, are facing uncertainty ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as key details about the competition remain unclear.

The tournament, organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is expected to begin on 17th March in Morocco, but officials have yet to confirm several important arrangements less than two weeks before kickoff.

Reports say CAF has not finalised the full competition calendar or completed some of the usual preparations for the tournament.

According to reports, organisers have “yet to confirm venues for the knockout rounds, issue accreditation to journalists, name match officials, or organise media and technical workshops.”

Security arrangements at match venues are also still unclear, raising more doubts about whether the competition will start as planned.

The Super Falcons recently played two friendly matches against Cameroon to prepare for the tournament.

Nigeria lost the first game 1–0 but won the second match 3–1 in Yaoundé.

There are also reports that Morocco asked for a postponement so it can complete its domestic football season, which was affected by other competitions held in the country earlier this year.

Earlier, South African lawmaker Peace Mabe suggested that her country could replace Morocco as host.

She said, “We took an opportunity that presented itself because we feel we have the necessary infrastructure and support (to host) the WAFCON.”

CAF has not confirmed any change yet, but reports say the body may announce a final decision soon.

The 2026 WAFCON will also serve as qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with four teams earning automatic places.
