Tinubu Redeems $100,000 Promise to Super Falcons After WAFCON Triumph

President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his promise of a $100,000 cash reward to each member of Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) victory in 2025.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the development on Monday, saying the players had started receiving payments worth about ₦140 million each.

The reward was promised after the Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final of the 2024 WAFCON on July 26, 2025, despite falling two goals behind.

The victory secured Nigeria’s 10th continental title and further extended the team’s record as Africa’s most successful women’s national football team.

The NSC statement, signed by Kola Daniel, the Special Assistant on Media to the commission’s Director-General, confirmed that the payment had been made.

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked Tinubu for honouring his commitment, describing the payment as recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.

At the reception in July 2025, Tinubu also awarded each player and member of the technical crew the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

He further promised each player and technical team member a three-bedroom apartment under the government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.

Tinubu had praised the players for their determination, saying their victory had inspired millions of Nigerians, particularly young girls.

“You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable,” he said during the reception.

The president also approved $50,000 for each member of the technical crew.

The latest announcement comes after concerns over delays in fulfilling the promises.

In July 2026, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko said the cash rewards had been paid into the players’ bank accounts.

The Super Falcons’ 2025 triumph came after goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini overturned Morocco’s two-goal lead in the final.
