A caller on Hard Facts has called for the extension of the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara, arguing that the governor has not demonstrated genuine repentance for his actions.

The caller emphasized that despite multiple public displays of remorse, Fubara has repeatedly failed to adhere to commitments made to restore peace in the state. The ongoing political crisis, which led to Fubara’s suspension by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, alongside his deputy and state lawmakers, remains a focal point of contention in Rivers State.

‎‎The caller referenced a peace agreement signed by Fubara in Abuja, facilitated by President Tinubu, aimed at resolving the political turmoil that has gripped the state since October 2023. According to the caller, Fubara initially appeared cooperative but reverted to actions that undermined the agreement, suggesting a pattern driven by a desire for power and control. This alleged deviation has fueled skepticism about the governor’s commitment to stabilizing Rivers State, particularly amid disputes with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Praising the current administration under Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), the caller credited the relative calm in Rivers State to Ibas’s leadership. The caller further proposed that Ibas be empowered to oversee the upcoming local government elections, even if it requires extending Fubara’s suspension. He stressed that allowing the sole administrator to manage the elections would ensure a more orderly process, warning that rushing into democratic exercises without proper preparation could lead to further instability. ‎“If you don’t know the value of what you’re holding, you’re going to lose it,” the caller cautioned, urging a cautious approach to reinstating democratic processes in the state.

‎In a broader reflection, the caller suggested that Nigeria’s democratic system requires careful study and implementation to avoid mistakes.
