The announcement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Aisha 'Binani' Dahiru as the winner of the Adamawa State supplementary election has been met with controversy.

The Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, who INEC has now directed to stay away from all activities of the electoral umpire and the election in the state, announced that the APC candidate won the election. This action, which INEC has described as “a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer”, has also led to calls for the investigation and prosecution of the Adamawa REC.

Reacting to this, a Nigeria Info Hard Facts caller has pointed to morality as the biggest challenge with conducting credible elections in Nigeria:

“We appear to be losing our conscience as a people and our morality. It’s not about funding INEC or bring professors to come and announce results,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a dramatic turn of events, the incumbent, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has now been declared the winner of the election after collation resumed yesterday.
