A broadcast journalist in Ghana’s Central Region, Obibini Kojo Bansah, has dismissed rumours about a planned “Nigerians Must Go” protest. He clarified that the alleged protest site at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra was inspected and found to be calm, with no demonstration taking place.
Bansah acknowledged ongoing tensions regarding the presence of Nigerians in Ghana’s petty trading sector. He cited Ghana’s Investment Promotion Centre Act 865 of 2013, which bars non-citizens and foreign-owned businesses, not only Nigerians, from engaging in small-scale trading and street hawking, labelling such activities as illegal.
He highlighted that the Ghana Union Traders Association, GUTA, has repeatedly called on authorities to enforce these laws. The association has also warned of potential nationwide protests if the government continues to overlook foreign infiltration in local petty trading, which they stress is reserved exclusively for Ghanaian citizens.
Bansah further advised journalists to address individuals by their names rather than their nationalities when reporting such issues. He explained that framing stories this way helps prevent the unfair stigmatisation of entire countries.
Concluding his remarks, Bansah emphasised that many Nigerians in Ghana operate legitimate businesses and contribute positively to society. He noted that, despite these trade concerns, Ghanaians and Nigerians generally coexist peacefully.
