In a brazen attack on Monday, March 25th, 2024, two suspects allegedly attempted to steal a Toyota Corolla car from an e-hailing taxi driver in Port Harcourt in the early hours of the day.

The incident reportedly turned violent, with the suspects stabbing the driver before attempting to flee with the vehicle. However, the driver's cries for help alerted bystanders, who formed a mob, apprehended and attacked the suspects before police arrived at the scene.

Rivers State Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, providing an update on the incident confirmed that the suspects were taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention. She said officers from the Elekahia Police Division responded to a distress call, secured the scene and rescued the injured driver.

Speaking about the incident on Nigeria Info’s Hard Facts with Sam Chinedu, Human rights lawyer, Henry Ekine, condemned the mob attack on the suspected car thieves. He stressed that their rights had been violated, as the Nigerian Constitution guarantees a fair trial to every citizen.

“You don’t have the right to determine the guilt or innocence of any person,” he stated.
