The Immediate Past Secretary-General of the Ijaw Youth Council, Maobuye Nangi, has urged Nigerians to look beyond emotions and tribal sentiments in choosing political leaders ahead of the upcoming elections.
Nangi made the call while speaking on Nigeria Info’s Hard Facts, where he described the election season as a “promise season,” with politicians making numerous promises to win voters’ support. He urged the electorate to pay closer attention to candidates’ track records, capacity and plans for governance.
He also criticised the growing focus on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in political campaigns in Rivers State, describing it as a “psychological operation” aimed at distracting voters. According to Nangi, Wike is only one individual, and political aspirants should focus their campaigns on what they intend to achieve for the people of Rivers State.
Nangi further said Rivers State is still facing governance challenges under the current administration. He called on anyone seeking power through godfatherism to be transparent about any agreements reached in the process, challenging them to disclose such arrangements to the people. He also stressed the need for voters to become better informed and demand clear answers from political candidates on how they intend to address the state’s challenges.
