A caller on Hello PH has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding a man who was pressured into contributing to his wife’s father’s burial expenses, despite the presence of other siblings who could have shared the financial responsibility.
The caller expressed support for the man’s decision, criticising both the wife and her family for what she described as a lack of tact and emotional intelligence. She argued that there was no justification for an extravagant burial, particularly if the financial burden exceeded the man’s means. According to her, if the amount involved was indeed as substantial as suggested, it would have been more appropriate for the family to adjust expectations rather than place pressure on a single individual.
She further emphasised that burial costs should be shared equitably among family members, including in-laws and extended relatives, rather than being concentrated on one person.
She also faulted the wife’s response, stating that she should have stood up against the arrangement instead of complying with it. She warned that such handling of financial and family pressure could strain or even damage the marriage, suggesting that if conflict arises, a wife should prioritise defending her marriage rather than yielding entirely to family expectations.
