Is the Nigerian society promoting the idea that women should not be financially independent?

This was the question Jude Omamegbe posed on Nigeria Info’s Hello Port Harcourt, during a conversation about women being financially independent.

The conversation comes amidst controversies surrounding the death of Nigerian gospel artist, Osinachi Nwachukwu, who reportedly faced domestic abuse before her death.

Reports have it that her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, who is being investigated over her death, also acted as her manager. The deceased’s sister, Favour Made, confirmed this in a Vanguard interview where she said Mr Nwachukwu negotiated and received payment on behalf of the late singer.

Speaking about the financial independence of the typical Nigerian woman on Hello Port Harcourt, a caller told Jude that only “insecure men” will not want their wives to be as wealthy as they are.
