Members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, have adopted Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

GAC Chairman Tajudeen Olusi announced the decision after a meeting at Lagos House, Marina, on Tuesday, saying all 21 members present supported the move.

“The constitution of our party provides for primaries, but it also allows for consensus as a means of promoting unity and peace,” Olusi said. “We have agreed that Dr. Obafemi Hamzat is the consensus candidate of our party, and we will stand by him.”

After the announcement, Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu jointly raised Hamzat’s hand in a symbolic endorsement that drew applause from party leaders.

Sanwo-Olu said the council agreed to fund the purchase of Hamzat’s nomination form.

“Our leaders have collectively agreed to support the financing of the nomination form for our consensus candidate,” the governor said. “Some even contributed from personal savings to ensure this process is seamless.”

He also noted that the APC had earlier purchased nomination forms for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

The GAC, formed in 1999, is the APC’s top advisory and political decision-making body in Lagos, influencing succession planning, appointments and zoning arrangements.

Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, has recently secured endorsements from key stakeholders across the state ahead of the 2027 race.
