The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has adopted Adewole Adebayo as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following a consensus endorsement at the party’s national convention in Bauchi State.
Adebayo, who was the SDP’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 election, emerged unopposed during the convention attended by delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Party officials said the adoption was carried out in line with electoral guidelines and reflected broad support within the party.
The motion to adopt Adebayo as the party’s consensus candidate was reportedly moved by the Lagos State chairman of the party and subsequently endorsed by other state chairmen before delegates approved it through a voice vote.
Speaking after his emergence, Adebayo pledged to pursue people-oriented governance focused on economic recovery, job creation, security, education, and healthcare if elected president in 2027.
He also called on opposition parties to work together to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The SDP candidate further warned against what he described as increasing political intolerance and the danger of “one-man rule” in Nigeria, arguing that democracy can only thrive when political parties and citizens are allowed to operate freely.
He alleged that even members of the ruling party were facing internal suppression.
At the convention, party leaders also criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary, accusing both institutions of undermining opposition politics in the country.
Convention chairman Prof. Usman Bugaje urged members to remain loyal to the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The convention also produced new members of the party’s National Working Committee as the SDP begins preparations for the next presidential race.
