Nigerian education administrator Amos Dangut has assumed office as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC.

Dangut took over as the 14th Registrar of the council on Oct. 1, 2026, according to a statement by WAEC Head of Public Affairs at its headquarters in Accra, Ghana, Demianus Ojijeogu.

He will serve a five-year tenure ending in September 2031, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

Dangut previously served as Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria, a position he assumed in October 2023. His appointment as Registrar was ratified by the council's International Governing Board at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra in March 2026.

Born on Oct. 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a master's degree and doctorate in Animal Science, as well as a master's degree in Education Administration and Planning.

His career with WAEC spans more than two decades. He joined the council in 1998 after beginning his professional career in education at St. Louis College, Jos, where he served as an examiner.

He subsequently held several positions within WAEC, including Assistant Registrar and Subject Officer in the Test Development Division in Lagos, Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi, and Branch Controller in Yola.

Dangut later served as Deputy Registrar and Controller of the Post Examinations Department, Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator of the Ikeja Zonal Office, and Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office before becoming Head of the Nigerian National Office.

WAEC described him as skilled in test development, test administration and the management of its branch and zonal offices. The council said he has used information and communications technology to improve processes in examination development, post-examination activities and test administration.

As Head of the National Office, Dangut served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, as well as the Grange Educational Foundation.

WAEC said he also represented the council at education policy platforms, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

During his tenure as Head of the National Office, Dangut oversaw several examination reforms, including the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw the development and operation of the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and digital systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners' attendance.

WAEC said Dangut has demonstrated integrity, transparency, diligence and commitment to service throughout his career. He has also published academic works in national and international journals and presented papers at conferences.

He currently serves as the West African sub-region's representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
