Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership of the opposition party.
Atiku’s resignation comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections and follows his involvement in forming a new political coalition, the Alliance Democratic Congress.
In a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman in his Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku announced his departure from the party he co-founded.
His resignation letter was shared publicly on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth, via the social media platform X.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter began.
Atiku expressed appreciation for the opportunities he had within the PDP, including serving as Nigeria’s Vice President for two terms and contesting the presidency twice.
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
He described the decision as painful but inevitable due to what he called “irreconcilable differences” within the party.
Atiku concluded the letter by wishing the PDP well and thanking its leadership and supporters for their years of collaboration.
