An aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, has criticised the Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.
Ibe, in a statement on Monday, described the ruling by Justice Peter Lifu as an attempt to weaken opposition parties and undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
He alleged that the judgment contradicted an earlier order by the Court of Appeal directing Justice Lifu to suspend further action on the matter pending the determination of an appeal.
Ibe cited an appeal involving Justices Mohammed A. Danjuma, Adebunkunola A. Banjoko, and Oyejoju O. Oyewumi, saying the appellate court had fixed October 27, 2026, for hearing and ordered a stay of proceedings.
He accused the ruling party of attempting to entrench a one-party system ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the judgment as a threat to democratic competition.
The Federal High Court had earlier ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC, Action Peoples Party, Action Alliance, Accord Party, and Zenith Labour Party over alleged failure to meet constitutional electoral requirements.
