In a major shift in foreign policy, Canada has announced plans to formally recognise a Palestinian state by September 2025  joining the United Kingdom and France.

Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement in Ottawa on Wednesday, stating that Canada’s recognition will be conditional on key reforms and democratic elections by the Palestinian Authority. He described the move as a necessary response to the “untenable status quo” in Gaza and the broader region.

“The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, combined with the complete breakdown of peace negotiations, leaves us no choice but to pursue a different path,” Carney said. “A two-state solution remains the only viable answer to long-term peace, and recognition is a step toward that reality.”

The decision immediately drew strong condemnation from Israel. A statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry accused Canada of "rewarding terrorism," claiming that such recognition would embolden Hamas and other militant groups.

“This is a misguided and dangerous move,” said Israeli government spokesperson Lior Halutz. “Granting statehood recognition under current conditions sends the wrong message that violence can achieve political goals.”

Canada’s announcement comes just weeks after both the UK and France declared similar intentions, citing the need for a “new diplomatic framework” following months of intense fighting in Gaza and mounting civilian casualties.
