Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has apologised to the club’s supporters following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Italian side Como in the Champions League.
Nico Paz opened the scoring inside two minutes as Como raced to a four-goal lead before Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for United.
Carrick, who approached United’s travelling supporters after the final whistle, described the performance as unacceptable and took full responsibility for the result.
“I’m frustrated — more than frustrated, I’m really angry, to be honest,” Carrick told reporters. “I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and performance. It stops with me, and I accept that totally.”
The United manager also apologised to the fans, saying the display was unacceptable for a club of United’s stature.
Asked whether he feared losing his job, Carrick said he had not given his position any thought, insisting his focus was on the supporters and turning around the team’s fortunes ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.
