A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday set Dec. 8 to hear an ex parte motion filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra, seeking his transfer from the Sokoto Correctional Facility.

Kanu was convicted on Nov. 20 on seven counts of terrorism and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was moved to Sokoto after the court said the Kuje Correctional Facility was unsafe for him because of past prison breaks

Kanu had dismissed his legal team before the verdict and chose to represent himself.

At Thursday’s hearing, Justice James Omotosho refused to take the motion after Emmanuel Kanu, the inmate’s younger brother, attempted to appear for him.

The judge noted Emmanuel is not a lawyer and therefore cannot speak for the convict.

“This ex parte motion cannot be moved on the convict’s behalf because you are not a legal practitioner,” Omotosho said.

He advised Emmanuel to hire a lawyer or seek assistance from the Legal Aid Council.

The judge also cautioned the public against misinformation, saying Kanu does not need to be physically present in court for his appeal record to be compiled.
