The Department of State Services (DSS) arrested a suspected gunrunner in Cross River State, recovering 832 rounds of live ammunition.
Operatives apprehended Kelvin Ebikeniye Dugo at Ivara Esu Estate in Odukpani Local Government Area after he received a consignment reportedly hidden in food items.
The ammunition included two empty AK-47 magazines.
Security sources said Dugo intended to purchase the weapons from another suspected gunrunner, Azenda Barnabas, also known as Jagaban, based in Aliade, Benue State.
“The operatives intercepted Dugo moments after he received the consignment,” a DSS source said. “This successful operation is part of our ongoing nationwide efforts to dismantle gun-running syndicates and curb illegal arms proliferation.”
The DSS has intensified operations across the country, focusing on preventing the circulation of illegal firearms and ensuring public safety.
Officials stressed that the arrest reflects a broader commitment to security and the rule of law.
“Our pursuit of criminals involved in arms trafficking is sustained and resolute,” the source added, noting that similar interventions are ongoing in multiple states.
The suspect remains in DSS custody, and investigations are ongoing to identify other networks involved in the illegal arms trade.
