The Federal Government on Monday formally handed over four federal road projects in Abia State to the state government for urgent completion and issued a 30-day ultimatum to contractors to resume work or be sanctioned, officials said.

The roads handed over to the Alex Otti administration include the Owerri–Umuaka Road, Onuigbo–Umuahia Road, the Omezuo Bridge, and the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road. The Abia State Governor put in a formal request for those roads to the presidency, who approved it as part of its efforts to fast-track infrastructure delivery in the southeast.

Federal and state engineers will coordinate on supervision and handover protocols, according to documents released after the event.

The government said the move is intended to unblock delays that have stalled commerce and worsen travel times. Abia officials said the state will prioritise the projects and work to ensure contractors meet quality and safety standards.
