FG Probes Abuja–Kaduna Train Derailment, Sets Up Emergency Committee

The Federal Government has moved to avert a repeat of Tuesday’s train derailment along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, as the Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa'id Alkali has constituted a stakeholders committee to investigate the incident and recommend lasting safety measures.

According to astatement issued by the Director of Press and Information, Janet McDickson Noah,   the committee will review the immediate and remote causes of the accident, and advise on reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s rail operations.

The panel, chaired by Musa O. Ibrahim (DOOPST), has members drawn from government agencies, the Nigerian Railway Corporation, civil society, engineering firms, and passenger representatives. 

They include 
- Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu STA (HMT), 
- Engr. Zirra Finbar D(RTS), 
- Barr. Omotola Olusegun D(Legal) who will serve as Member/Secretary, 
- Dr. Kayode Opeifa (MD NRC), 
- Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe (Inspector Railway), 
- Representatives of Technics Engineering Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd, CCECC, as well as male and female passengers.

Alkali, while expressing concern for passengers’ safety, tasked the committee to submit practical recommendations that will not only address the Jerre derailment but also restore public confidence in the nation’s railway system.
