The Guards Brigade, Nigerian Army, says a National Youth Service Corps member, Mr. Abdulsamad Jamiu, died after being caught in crossfire during a robbery response operation in Dei-Dei, Abuja.

Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Olawuyi Odunola, said troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on night patrol on April 25 when they responded to a distress call from Shagari Estate over an armed robbery.

She said troops came under fire from fleeing suspects, leading to a “brief but intense exchange” in which the corps member was struck.

“The situation was volatile and fast-moving as troops engaged the armed robbers and tried to protect residents,” Odunola said.

She said the victim was rushed for medical attention but later died from his injuries.

The Army described the incident as “tragic and deeply regrettable,” adding that commanders and personnel have expressed condolences to the family, the NYSC, and affected residents.

Odunola said an investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances of the shooting, with findings to be made public.

She added that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

The Guards Brigade reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory and urged residents to remain calm and support security operations.
