The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission says it did not seek any fresh extension of the detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El Rufai during court proceedings on March 17, 2026.

In a statement, the commission said it appeared in court to respond to an application filed by El Rufai challenging the renewal of his remand order granted on March 5.

According to the ICPC, its legal team served the defence with a response, after which El Rufai’s counsel requested an adjournment to enable them reply.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter to March 31, 2026 for further hearing.

The commission explained that the initial remand order granted it 14 days to detain the former governor while investigating allegations of money laundering and abuse of office.

It added that upon expiration, it applied for a 14 day extension which was approved by the court on March 5.

The ICPC also noted that an earlier application by El Rufai’s legal team to set aside the initial remand order was dismissed on March 9.

According to the commission, El Rufai remains in lawful custody under the subsisting remand order.

It said all actions taken are in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and were authorised by a court of competent jurisdiction.

The ICPC reaffirmed its stance against media trials and urged the public to rely on verified information as investigations continue.
