The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared itself ready for the Aug. 15 governorship election in Osun State, following a five-day assessment of its preparations and a statewide mock accreditation exercise.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan made the declaration on Saturday during a media briefing at the end of the commission's readiness tour of the state, saying the electoral body was prepared to conduct a credible poll.
Amupitan said the assessment included a mock accreditation exercise held across selected polling units in Osun's three senatorial districts to test the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) ahead of the election.
According to him, the exercise confirmed the commission's technological and operational preparedness, with most voters successfully accredited through facial recognition within seconds.
He said technical issues encountered during the exercise were immediately resolved by the commission's information and communications technology team.
"The mock accreditation exercise is our quality control protocol. What we saw today confirmed that our technological defence against identity theft and result manipulation is robust and fully operational," Amupitan said.
The INEC chairman also assured voters that the commission would not allow violence, intimidation or other forms of interference to undermine the electoral process.
He called on journalists to work closely with the commission in providing accurate and responsible coverage of the election, describing the media as a critical partner in promoting public confidence and combating misinformation.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for Aug. 15, with INEC expected to deploy election personnel and materials across the state's polling units following the successful completion of its pre-election assessments.
