The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has opened an investigation into the Abuja-Kaduna train derailment that occurred in Kaduna on Tuesday, sparking panic among passengers.

The incident happened along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train departed Abuja at about 11 a.m. Six passengers were injured, but no deaths were reported.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers scrambling for safety amid confusion and fear.

NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Oladeji, confirmed that a go-team has been deployed to the site to gather evidence, liaise with relevant stakeholders, and determine the cause of the derailment.

Director General Alex Badeh Jr. expressed sympathy for those injured, assuring that the investigation would be thorough and transparent.

“We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians,” he said.

The Bureau said the investigation will consider both immediate and underlying factors, with safety recommendations to follow once findings are concluded.
