Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), in a mass defection that includes state lawmakers, federal lawmakers, and local government chairmen in the state.
In a letter addressed to the Diso-Chiranchi Ward Chairman of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, Yusuf announced his decision to quit the party, citing persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and ongoing legal battles that he said have weakened cohesion and widened divisions within the party.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the governor said in the letter, while expressing appreciation for the platform the NNPP provided since his political rise in 2022.
Alongside Yusuf’s resignation, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal House of Representatives members, and 44 local government chairmen are believed to have exited the NNPP, marking a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.
The governor said his decision was made after “careful reflection” and in what he described as the broader interest of the people of Kano State, while pledging continued commitment to peace, unity, and progress.
On Monday, Governor Yusuf held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, after which he said discussions focused on deepening federal support for Kano’s key priorities, including security, infrastructure development, and stronger collaboration with the federal government.
The meeting also came amid growing political speculation, with Yusuf reportedly seeking stronger partnerships to ensure Kano benefits more from national programmes and interventions.
