The Lagos State government has announced temporary road closures in parts of Lagos Island ahead of the Lagos Fanti Carnival scheduled for Monday.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the government said the road closures would begin at 7:00 a.m. on Monday to ensure a smooth and safe carnival procession.
According to the ministry, the affected routes include King George V Road at the junction by Mobil Filling Station, Onikan Roundabout inbound to TBS, Flagstaff House inbound to TBS, Outer Marina by State House inbound to TBS, Campbell Street by the Old Defence Building, and Catholic Mission Street by St. Nicholas Hospital.
The government said the temporary restriction was necessary to provide a secure and organised environment for participants and spectators expected to gather along the Lagos Island corridor for the annual cultural celebration.
Motorists and residents were advised to plan their movements in advance and use alternative routes during the period.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has also mapped out diversion routes to ease vehicular movement and reduce congestion around the carnival route.
Vehicles coming from Obalende and descending toward Onikan Roundabout will be redirected to Zone 2, while those coming from Bonny Camp toward McEwen Bridge and from Flagstaff House to TBS will be diverted to Obalende Bridge.
Motorists approaching from Outer Marina to TBS will also be redirected to Obalende Bridge.
The ministry said the traffic plan was designed to minimise disruption to commuters and businesses operating within the Lagos Island area, while ensuring a successful carnival celebration.
The government apologised for any inconvenience the road closures may cause and appealed to residents and motorists for cooperation.
The Lagos Fanti Carnival is a historic cultural event expected to attract residents, tourists and cultural enthusiasts, featuring music, dance and colourful displays celebrating Lagos’ Afro-Brazilian heritage.
