Residents in Lagos have shared mixed reactions to ongoing discussions about tax rules and possible penalties for those who fail to comply.

In a street interview with our correspondent, many respondents said they had heard about the tax issue but did not fully understand how it works.

Some also expressed uncertainty about deadlines and enforcement.

“I have heard about it, but I don’t know how they are doing it,” Mr Niyi, a local foreman said.

Mr Malik, a local painter, added, “This is my first time hearing that they will fine people.”

There were also concerns about possible penalties, including fines or blocked bank accounts.

Mr Malik also admitted feeling afraid after hearing such claims but said he would “do the needful when the time comes.”

Others questioned the timing of stricter tax measures, pointing to the current economic situation.

“The economy is bad and we are facing a lot of things,” Mr Samson, a local printer, said.

“They should focus on bigger problems, not tax now," Mr Samson added.

Some residents said they were not worried because of their low income.

“I barely have enough in my account to bother about being taxed,” Mr John, a local electrician, said, adding that basic needs like housing and feeding already take up most of their earnings.

Another respondent noted the lack of clear information.

“We don’t really know how it is going to be," Mr Folusho, a transporter, said.

"Today they will say yes, tomorrow they will say no,” he added.

Overall, the responses show a gap in public understanding and trust regarding tax policies, especially with the upcoming deadline given by the Lagos Tax Authority.
