The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced a ban on the movement of goods on regulated public transport buses across Lagos State, effective June 1.

LAMATA says the decision followed increasing complaints from commuters over the use of public buses, like the BRT, for transporting goods and heavy loads, which the agency says has affected passenger comfort, safety and efficient service delivery.

According to the Authority, the directive was reached after a strategic meeting with operators and maintenance heads of bus companies, where stakeholders agreed that the practice should be halted and reorganised to improve operations across the transport system.

LAMATA warned that enforcement of the directive would be strict, stating that any driver caught transporting goods during the suspension period would be dismissed and blacklisted.

The agency also said any terminal staff or LAMATA personnel found aiding or permitting the loading of goods onto regulated buses would face immediate dismissal.

LAMATA urged commuters, transport operators and the public to comply with the directive and make alternative arrangements for the movement of goods, while reiterating its commitment to a safer and more efficient transport system in Lagos.
