Nigeria’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars, Mai Martaba, has secured four nominations at the prestigious Septimius Awards in Amsterdam, one of Europe’s leading platforms celebrating diverse voices and global cinema.

The critically acclaimed film will compete in the following categories: Best African Film, Best African ActorBest Costume Design, and Best Make-Up & Hairstyling.

The director, Prince Daniel, expressed delight at the recognition, noting that the global spotlight on Nigerian films, particularly from the Kannywood section, is long overdue. “It is a privilege to be one of the voices carrying our stories to the world. This recognition is not just for Mai Martaba but for the entire industry and culture it represents,” he said.

Mai Martaba has continued to gain international traction. Earlier this year, it was one of only three Nollywood films screened at the Nollywood in Hollywood showcase in Los Angeles, where it was praised for its compelling narrative and cultural depth.

At the Septimius Awards, Mai Martaba will compete in the same categories with South Africa’s Oscars selection, Old Righteous Blues, and Kenya’s Oscars selection, Nawi, among other top-rated films from around the world. The recognition adds further weight to its international journey as it stands alongside strong African contenders.

Beyond the Septimius stage, Mai Martaba has already made its mark on the continent, winning Best Costume Design at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and earning a nomination for Best Indigenous Language (West Africa) at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Praised for its powerful storytelling and deep cultural vision, Mai Martaba has been described as a landmark in Nigerian cinema. Its success at the Septimius Awards signals a growing international appreciation of African narratives and creativity.

The 2025 Septimius Awards will take place in Amsterdam on September 3 and 4, continuing the tradition of celebrating groundbreaking projects from around the world.
