The late Sam Okwaraji

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced on Monday its approval for the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship.

The nationwide tournament honors the late Nigerian international Sam Okwaraji, who died during a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola on 12 August 1989, at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

The championship, initiated by the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, received endorsement from the Senate Committee on Sports Development, led by Senator Abdul Ningi.

In a letter signed by Ruth David, the NFF's Acting Director of Competitions, the endorsement was praised for its noble aims, emphasizing the positive influence on young participants and its role in promoting football development across the country.

The NFF also commended the foundation for its dedication to grassroots football and urged organizers to adhere to FIFA's established football rules.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the competition is slated to commence later this year, continuing Okwaraji's legacy of selfless dedication to the national team, an enduring inspiration for Nigerian youth.
