The Commonwealth Observation Group says the significance of Nigeria’s Presidential Election will strengthen the whole democracy in Africa.

Former South African President, Thabo Mbeki who is also the chair of the group, during a press conference on Monday in Abuja noted that Nigeria remains the largest democracy in Africa and is strategically positioned to strengthen democracy ideals throughout Africa.

He stressed that the Commonwealth had observed and supported the country’s democratic development since 1999 and will this year continue to assess whether the elections are conducted according to the democratic standards to which Nigeria has committed itself.

The South African former president mentioned that the group’s observations would include examining whether the electoral process is transparent and inclusive and whether the conditions for a successful election are in place.

He also expressed confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s preparedness for the polls.
