The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says 148,077 new electricity customers were connected to meters across the country in May and June 2025, bringing the total metered customers to 6,422,933.

In May, 63,180 customers got meters, while 84,897 were added in June.

As a result, the national metering rate inched up from 53.78% in May to 54.33% in June.

The NERC data also showed that the count of active electricity customers rose slightly, from 11,784,842 in May to 11,821,194 in June

By distribution company, Ikeja DisCo recorded the highest metering rate at 84.65%, followed by Eko at 83.33% and Abuja at 73.06%.

At the low end, Yola had 28.55%Jos 29.51%, and Kaduna 33.46%.

Some DisCos showed notable gains: Aba DisCo increased its metering rate from 37.88% to 45.17% after adding 12,376 new meters.

Benin DisCo crossed 50%, rising from 49.95% to 50.33%.

Despite progress, seven of the 12 DisCos remain below 50% metering, leaving many customers still under estimated billing regimes

To mitigate abuses from estimated billing, NERC continues to enforce monthly energy caps on feeders, limiting how much an unmetered customer can be charged based on feeder consumption and profiles of metered users.

As the metering drive persists, Nigeria faces structural and financial obstacles in closing the gap, and consumers will be watching whether added meters translate to fairer billing.
