The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed a viral video alleging that the National Identification Number (NIN) database has been breached.
In a statement Wednesday, NIMC Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, described the claim as false and unfounded, saying the video is a recycled report from 2024 that was previously disclaimed by the commission.
NIMC said its National Identity Database has not been breached or compromised and that it maintains a multi-layered security infrastructure to protect the personal data of registered citizens and legal residents.
The commission urged members of the public to disregard the video and rely on NIMC's official channels for information about the National Identity Management System.
NIMC also highlighted its recently launched NIN Authentication platform, known as NINAuth, which provides web, application programming interface and mobile verification services.
According to the commission, NINAuth requires the explicit consent of NIN holders before their data is shared for Know Your Customer processes and other verification purposes.
It said the platform allows people to verify their identities for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions without unnecessarily exposing their raw NIN or personal data.
NIMC said the initiative is part of its efforts to comply with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, which provide for the fair, lawful and transparent handling of personal data.
The commission said it would continue working with relevant security and government agencies to strengthen its systems and combat misinformation.
It also urged anyone with concerns about their NIN or personal data to contact NIMC through its official website, toll-free line or verified social media channels.
