The trial of the suspects accused of engineering the June 5, 2022 mass shooting and bomb attack at a Catholic Church in the city of Owo in Ondo State is set to begin at a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Five suspects, including Momoh Otuho Abubakar, Abdulhaleem Idris, Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Jamiu Abdulmalik, and Al Qasim Idris, are to stand trial for the attack at the St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, which killed at least 40 people and left over a hundred others injured.
Accused of being Al Shabab members - a terrorist group - among others, the suspects are alleged to have carried out the attacks in promotion of their religious persuasions.
Furthermore, they are alleged to have their "cell in Kogi", an offence the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2025 finds antithetical and punishable under Section 25(1).
On August 11, 2025, the Department of State Services (DSS) summoned the five men before Justice Emeka Nwite over their alleged complicity in the attack.
They were indicted on nine-count terrorism charges by the DSS, all of which they all pleaded not guilty.
