The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is exploring the possibility of fielding either former President Goodluck Jonathan or former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
This was disclosed by Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Governor Mohammed stated that both individuals are being considered due to their "popularity and integrity."
He noted that the party's leadership is committed to presenting a formidable candidate capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). "We are looking at all our options, and we have a lot of good people in the party," Mohammed said. "There is no doubt that both Jonathan and Obi are highly respected and have a strong following."
He explained that the PDP is focused on rebuilding its base and strategy after its defeat in the 2023 election. He stressed the importance of unity within the party and the need for a candidate who can appeal to a wide range of Nigerians.
Mohammed also mentioned that discussions are ongoing with various stakeholders, including party elders, governors, and youth groups, to ensure a consensus candidate is chosen. The goal is to avoid a repeat of past internal conflicts that may have contributed to the party's electoral setbacks.
While no official decision has been made, Mohammed's comments suggest that the PDP is casting a wide net in its search for a candidate to lead the party back to power. The move to consider figures like Jonathan, who is a former president, and Obi, who was a popular third-party candidate in the last election, indicates a strategic shift aimed at leveraging experience and broad appeal.
