The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled some high-profile members, including the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose, and suspended its National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

The decision, announced during the party’s National Convention in Ibadan, marks one of the most far-reaching disciplinary actions in the PDP’s recent history.

Delegates adopted the motion with little resistance, signaling a desire within the party to reset internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chief Olabode George moved the motion to expel the disgruntled leaders, with Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State seconding it.

Party leaders framed the expulsions as a necessary response to what they described as persistent anti-party activities, a pattern of internal sabotage, and actions they believe contributed to deepening divisions within the PDP.

The list of those removed cuts across multiple geopolitical zones and includes national officers, former lawmakers, and long-standing stakeholders.

Alongside Wike, Fayose, and Anyanwu, PDP expelled or removed eight other figures:

  • Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), National Legal Adviser

  • Umar Bature, National Organising Secretary

  • Mao Ohuabunwa

  • George Turner

  • Austin Nwachukwu

  • Abraham Amah

  • Mohammed Abdulrahman

  • Dan Orbih

For months, tensions had simmered between factions loyal to Wike and core establishment figures, with a series of litigations, public disagreements, and competing power blocs complicating efforts to stabilise the opposition party.

A court stopped Saturday's convention, ruling that Jigawa State's former governor, Sule Lamido, was illegally excluded from the list of chairmanship candidates.

The court restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing or participating in the convention.

The convention’s outcome appeared to be a decisive attempt to close that chapter.

Despite the court ruling, a faction of the party, led by Umar Damagun, proceeded with the convention.
