Political Parties Reject Calls to Suspend Campaigns Over Ebola

Some political parties have rejected calls to suspend campaign activities over Nigeria’s reported Ebola case, insisting that campaigns should continue with appropriate safety measures.

The All Progressives Congress has urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid politicising the outbreak, while the African Democratic Congress has expressed concern that the government could use the situation to restrict opposition campaigns.

The Social Democratic Party and Nigeria Democratic Congress have also opposed a blanket suspension, calling instead for stronger public health measures and safer campaign strategies to minimise the risk of transmission.

Meanwhile, public health experts have warned that temperature screening alone may fail to detect travellers infected with Ebola, particularly those who have not developed symptoms.

They have called for stronger disease surveillance, improved infection prevention in hospitals, increased public awareness and effective contact tracing.

Experts have also stressed the need to provide healthcare facilities with adequate protective equipment to prevent further transmission.
