Protests Erupt in Benue Over Killings as Military Launches Air Surveillance

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets, blocking major roads in Benue State in outrage over he recent deadly attacks in Yelwata and Daudu communities.

The attacks, reportedly executed by herders, resulted in hundreds of deaths, prompting widespread anger and demand for government intervention.

In Makurdi, police confronted protesters on Sunday, dispersing them with tear gas as they rallied for increased protection and swift justice. Amid the unrest, the military has initiated aerial surveillance over Makurdi and its environs to monitor and control the situation effectively.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has assumed control of security operations across the state, deploying Special Forces to critical hotspots, including Naka, Apa, Agatu, Daudu, and Yelwata. The Benue State Police Commissioner, Emenari Ifeanyi, reassured the public that the situation is being managed, with several arrests already made and efforts ongoing to apprehend the attackers.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has provided logistical support to bolster these security measures, urging residents to cooperate with the Special Forces to ensure their effective operation. The government remains committed to restoring peace and protecting its citizens amid these challenging times.
